Best Combine Performances from Future Packers

Best Combine Performances from Future Packers

The NFL Combine showcases great (or, in some cases, not so great) feats of athleticism from some of the best college football players in the world. But what kind of athletes have the Packers picked up after their combine workouts?

Pro Football Reference catalogues combine performances back to 2000, so here’s a quick look at how some of the Packers’ draft picks have performed in their time at the combine.

Fastest Packers in the 40 yard dash

The 40 yard dash is the premier event at the NFL combine, and a few Packers have posted blazing times. Here are the five best, including a top performance from Ahmad Carroll.

  1. Ahmad Carroll - CB - 4.34
  2. Nick Collins - S - 4.36
  3. David Clowney - WR - 4.36
  4. Javon Walker - WR - 4.38
  5. Terrence Murphy - WR - 4.38

Slowest Packers in the 40 yard dash

Unfortunately, not everyone can be the fastest. Johnny Jolly takes home the consolation prize for being the best at running the 40-yard dash very slowly.

  1. Johnny Jolly - DT - 5.41
  2. Jason Spitz - G - 5.40
  3. Mark Tauscher - T - 5.37
  4. Junius Coston - G - 5.31
  5. Scott Wells - C - 5.30

Packers in the vertical leap

Teams value the vertical leap and broad jump as a general measure of explosiveness, and to that end, both Will Blackmon and Ahmad Carroll were very explosive, tying for first in the vertical leap and coming in 1-2 in the broad jump. Shout out to A.J. Hawk for jumping like a defensive back.

  1. Will Blackmon - CB - 41”
  2. Ahmad Carroll - CB - 41”
  3. Ty Montgomery - RB - 40.5”
  4. A.J. Hawk - LB - 40”
  5. Nick Collins - S - 40”

Packers in the broad jump

Ten feet or so seems to be the upper limit for broad jumps, but Blackmon blasted past the 11-foot mark with his 133-inch jump in 2006.

  1. Will Blackmon - CB - 133"
  2. Ahmad Carroll - CB - 128"
  3. Javon Walker - WR - 128"
  4. Marques Anderson - SS - 127"
  5. Brandon Underwood - SS - 125"

Packers in the bench press

The bench press is the only strength-related drill at the combine, and the guys who push heavy things around for a living definitely make the most of it. While the average human would struggle to lift 225 pounds on the bench press one time, several Packers draft picks did it 30 or more times at the combine, including an eye-popping 36 reps by Corey Linsley.

  1. Corey Linsley - C - 36
  2. Nick Perry - OLB - 35
  3. Donnell Washington - DT - 34
  4. B.J. Raji - DT - 33
  5. Desmond Bishop - LB - 33

Packers in the three cone drill

The three cone drill might be the most unusual test that players do over the course of the combine weekend, but it’s a good one. No other drill tests change of direction ability quite like this one, and even at his size Jeff Janis managed an incredible time.

  1. Jeff Janis - WR - 6.64
  2. Davon House - CB - 6.65
  3. Will Blackmon - CB - 6.67
  4. Greg Jennings - WR - 6.68
  5. Jerron McMillian - SS - 6.69

Packers in the 20 yard shuttle

The 20 yard shuttle is similar to the three cone drill in that it tests agility and change of direction abilities. Typically cornerbacks and receivers dominate this drill, but A.J. Hawk and Brett Hundley both posted great times.

  1. Joey Thomas - CB - 3.88
  2. Casey Hayward - CB - 3.90
  3. A.J. Hawk - LB - 3.96
  4. Brett Hundley - QB - 3.98
  5. Jeff Janis - WR - 3.98

Tallest Packers at the combine

The NFL combine is also allows teams to get standardized physical measurements on all the prospects invited to participate. Here are some of the tallest Packers players, including three prospects drafted last year.

  1. Brennan Curtin - OT - 6-9
  2. Breno Giacomini - OT - 6-7
  3. Dean Lowry - DE - 6-6
  4. Jason Spriggs - OT - 6-6
  5. Kyle Murphy - OT - 6-6

Heaviest Packers at the combine

Finally, here are the five players who pushed the scales to their limits at the combine. The Freezer appears to have been fully stocked even in the spring of 2009.

  1. B.J. Raji - DT - 337
  2. Chad Clifton - OT - 334
  3. Donnell Washington - DT - 332
  4. James Lee - DT - 327
  5. Derek Sherrod - OT - 321
