Packers Trade RB Ty Montgomery to Ravens

The Packers have reportedly traded running back Ty Montgomery to the Baltimore Ravens.

Ian Rapoport, who broke the news in the above tweet, reported earlier today that the Packers were shopping Montgomery.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Packers will receive a seventh round pick for Montgomery in the 2020 Draft, an indication that Montgomery may have been on the outs no matter what.

What this means for the Packers

The Packers had a bit of a logjam in their offensive backfield that this moves eases a bit. Aaron Jones clearly deserves more work than he’s getting and Montgomery offered some redundancy there. Barring another move in the backfield, the Packers will probably work with Jones and fellow 2017 draft pick Jamaal Williams moving forward.

More broadly, this move represents a measure of accountability for Montgomery’s actions on Sunday. Whether the disputed reports about Montgomery’s conduct in Los Angeles are accurate or not, he clearly screwed up in a key moment. With many players on the Packers clearly upset over his decision, the Packers have shown Montgomery the door.

The only question at this point is whether or not he’d have been cut outright had they not found a trading partner.
